Manet's career was surrounded by controversy almost from the very start. The hard-edged technique of his early works was not what Salon audiences expected, and when he started painting subjects as uncompromising as the unclothed picknicker in the Dejeuner sur l'herbe or the aggressively naked young courtesan in Olympia, with her suggestive cat, Paris was outraged. Such scandal was grist to the mill of his friend, the outstanding Realist novelist Émile Zola.

Zola's passionate polemic in Manet's defence is justly famous as one of the finest writings on art of the 19th century. Manet thanked Zola by painting his portrait, which the novelist commemorated in a further essay; and when Manet died at the early age of 51, Zola wrote a moving summation of his life's work. All these writings are included in this volume, which is introduced by the Zola specialist Robert Lethbridge.

Are there additional fees?

For UK and European orders, shipping taxes are included - the price you pay is the final price.

The USA are subject to Regular Carrier Charges, Handing Fees, Duty Payable Fee and Tariffs (COO). These are all calculated at checkout. 

Where international deliveries are subject to local customs charges and fees, it will be your responsibility to pay these and they are not included in the cost of delivery.
What is the return policy?

Returns should be within 30 days from the date of purchase.

We want you to be completely happy with your purchase from us. If for whatever reason you aren’t, we do offer refunds on almost all products*, provided they are returned in the original condition and packaging.

*We cannot offer returns on our custom prints or Courtauld clothing, as they are printed to order.  Returns of Courtauld Editions are non returnable. 

If you are returning an undamaged order from the EU or rest of world following a change in mind, a restock fee of £15.00 will be taken off your refund once it has been returned to us.

Please note the delivery and duties for the USA are not refundable.
How do you calculate your shipping cost?

Our shipping rates are calculated by weight, supplier and shipping location. You can see the final cost at checkout.

Do you offer Click and Collect?

Yes we do. We offer a Click and Collect service. You will need to choose Pick Up at checkout.

Orders can be collected within 2-4 days of placing your order. 

We will keep your order for 28 days from the day it is ready for collection. After that, we will return the item(s) to stock and refund you via your original payment method.

If you are unable to pick up your order within 28 days, please email us at shop@courtauld.ac.uk to see if it is possible to extent the holding period.
